The Haysi Police Department was incorporated in 1936 with records and research from local Historian Dennis Reedy showing the first officer of the Town of Haysi started in 1934. Currently the Police Department provides Law Enforcement coverage with 2 full-time officers, 2 part-time officers, and 2 Auxiliary officers. Haysi Police Department only employees DCJS Certified Law Enforcement Officers, and require auxiliary officers to maintain the same DCJS certifications. Dickenson County Sheriff’s Office and Virginia State Police also assist the Town of Haysi in answer calls and providing officers as needed or requested by the police department. The Police Department operates a mixed fleet of white vehicles with red strips, and camouflaged military obtained utility vehicles.
Chief of Police – George Wallace
Serving in the Law Enforcement Community since 1988 and serving the Haysi Police Department since 2000. Chief Wallace refers to the Town of Haysi as his own Mayberry from the Andy Griffith Show. Chief Wallace deals with all day to day operations of the Police Department, over sees the Town Maintenance, and was one of the first School Resource Officers in Dickenson County. Chief Wallace is sworn as a Dickenson County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Sheriff, and is also a volunteer of Haysi Volunteer Fire Department, and previously served as Haysi Fire Chief. When asked about all the different functions he performs for the town, Chief Wallace stated in a small town such as Haysi you sometimes have to wear many hats. Chief Wallace welcomes all visitors from near or far to stop by the Police Department voice questions, concerns, comments, or just to stop and say hello.
Assistant Chief of Police – Bobby Edwards
Serving in the Law Enforcement Community since 2001, and the Haysi Police Department since 2010. Edwards is a DCJS General Instructor, and a Basic Life Support Instructor. Edwards serves as the School Resource Officer for Haysi High School and Sandlick Elementary School. He also handles all computer related investigations, accident reconstruction, grant writing, and report requests made to the town. Edwards also is utilized by the Town of Haysi as an Emergency Medical Technician, Computer Technician, and Locksmith. Edwards is also employed by Dickenson County Sheriff’s Office as a Deputy Sheriff.
Patrolman -Brent Wallace
Serving in public safety as a firefighter since 1999, and the Haysi Police Department since 2013. Officer Wallace is also employed by Dickenson County Sheriff’s Office as a Deputy Sheriff.
Patrolman -Grant Garrett
Serving in the Law Enforcement since 2010, and the Haysi Police Department starting in 2013. Garrett is also employed by Dickenson County Sheriff’s Office as a Deputy Sheriff.
Auxiliary Patrolman -Scottie Owens
Serving in the Law Enforcement Community since 1995, and the Haysi Police Department since 2011. Owens is a Firearms Instructor, General Instructor, First Aid & CPR Instructor, Defensive Tactics Instructor, and Defensive Driving instructor. Owens is also employed by Dickenson County Emergency Management, and Red Onion State Prison.
Auxiliary Patrolman -Donald Viers
Viers is a certified DCJS Law Enforcement Officer, Viers also works as the Criminal Justice Instructor for Dickenson County Public Schools.
